Dirty Three

Dirty Three

The Dirty Three are an instrumental trio who started playing around the Melbourne pub scene in the early nineties. The three were quite well known to those within the Melbourne music scene. Warren Ellis, on violin, was playing with the Black Eyed Susans, and put in appearances with Kim Salmon and Tex, Don and Charlie. Mick Turner had started out playing guitar in the Sick Things, then in The Moodists, Fungus Brains and Venom P. Stinger. Drummer Jim White had also played in Venom P. Stinger, having played in Hunters and Collectors and the fabulously named People With Chairs Up Their Noses.

The Dirty Three's music covers much territory. There is a definite Eastern influence, and the early material remains quite raucous, in keeping with their pub rock roots. They are somewhat psychedelic, but their music tends to invoke melacholy rather than magic. Some of their tunes soar from the depths of seeming misery to great ecstatic heights; others simply but compellingly plot out a more even pace.

Dirty Three

[ Fmt = 2DVD | Label = Madman | Rel = 2007 ]
The Dirty Three are the rough and ready jewels in the crown of Australian rock and roll history. Born from the need to put food on the table and spawned from the intensely collaborative local Australian music scene in the 80s and early 90s, the Dirty Three pioneered the instrumental rock and roll music scene in Australia with their cathartic, sometimes violent and always spellbinding brand of music. Within a few short years, they achieved local and international success and left Australian shores to take their Music to the world. To this day the band continues to tour the world and serve the music that they see as a real, living and breathing thing that chooses the Dirty Three's custodianship. The documentary chases the bands history through extensive archival footage and interviews with international luminaries.

Review: Each new Dirty Three album hails the continued development of the wonderful trio. Ten years since their dingy beginnings, the new album is their most song-structured set to date, and, as such, they are joined by the vocals of Cat Power and Sally Timms on a track each. The instrumentation also branches out from the violin-guitar-drums combo, with bazouki, piano, mandolin, organ, bass and bagpipes adding to the sound. The music is instantly recognisable as the Dirty Three: there's no mistaking Warren violin, Mick's guitar, nor Jim's drums. Once again, the band produce an album full of romance, passion, drama, loss, despair, anguish. Actually, this album has less of the down side of life that permeates the Dirty Three's music – another beautiful creation. [Seb]

In The Fishtank (with Low)

[ Fmt = 12" | Label = KonKurrent ]
In November 1999, Konkurrent invited Low to record one of Konk's in-house Fishtank-sessions. Low, being familiar with the series, accepted. In the spirit of In the Fishtank, Low took things a step further and extended the invitation to their friends, Dirty Three. They invited them to collaborate on the session, which took place when both bands played the multimedia festival, Crossing Border, in Amsterdam. One can imagine that this created quite a hectic scene when the actual recording took place. While Low were soundchecking, Dirty Three got off the plane at Schipol Airport. And when Dirty Three were busy doing overdubs, Low did a wonderful show at the festival. Through it all, both bands kept their legendary cool and recorded, faster than anyone could have guessed, six terrific songs. The combination of Low's open, desolate sound and the melancholic-yet-folky violin of Dirty Three's Warren Ellis inspired Mimi to indulge in a more croony way of singing and Alan to play some amazing banjo. A perfect fit. A perfect Fishtank.
