Love Of Diagrams

Melbourne 3-piece Love Of Diagrams have rapidly earned a reputation as one of the most energetic, dynamic and urgent bands in town. Their rock music is both intelligent and appealing—stuttering, crunching down-strokes of guitar, nasty slithering fuzz-bass and drumming with irresistible bounce. There are no vocals, just perfectly crafted duelling melodies, intertwining rhythms and hooks everywhere. Love of Diagrams cannily avoid instrumental cliché by maintaining a post-punk abrasiveness that constantly threatens to tip over into full-blown brutality. Monica on drums plays with The Bites and is ex Sea Scouts.

Love Of Diagrams EP

[ Fmt = CD | Label = Matador | Rel = 2007 ]
This Melbourne band has been making their mark on the Australian music scene since 2003 with two frenetic, angular EPs, a 7-inch, and an album on Unstable Ape. This is their US debut, a 4-song minimalist pre-album artifact. Their sound reflects the experimentation of no wave and the immediacy and off-kilter tunefulness of classic UK post-punk. Their stripped down guitar-bass-drums racket and call-and-response vocals emit a wonderfully controlled urgency. Limited edition die-cut digipak with a top-cap, printed in a dayglo Pantone ink.

Review: I had my first listen of this today and immediately wanted to listen to it again. Love Of Diagrams' music has hooks, but not in any irritating way. Their melodies don't stick in your head (well, not in mine anyway), but it is the atmosphere or feeling that stays with you. I might just have to listen to this a third time now. [Seb]
